Implementing the UFLI Foundations Program: A Step-by-Step Guide for Elementary Teachers

The purpose of this website is to share my personal experiences using the UFLI phonics program. With all of the changes in reading instruction and the shift to more systematic, explicit phonics instruction, the UFLI program will be a game changer. Over the last year I have been implementing the program in Kindergarten through third grade during push in support as well as reading intervention blocks. My goal is to help teachers succeed with UFLI.

Within the site, I am providing a simple breakdown of what I think are the critical “must knows” for anyone new to UFLI. For example, I have outlined 3 major components to familiarize yourself with on the “Essentials” tab. The essentials of the program include the UFLI manual for teacher script and word lists within each step of the two day lesson plan. The online section aslo helps familiarize new comers with the “Tool Box” link within the UFLI website to access the slide decks for each lesson. Lastly, I have referenced the student “Tools” required to implement the program as suggested by the authors of UFLI. For example, tools needed include foam letters, magnetic white boards and cookie sheets for word buidling. The website tab titled, “Resources” will bring you to teacher reccommended products and the corresponding Amazon links to get the program up and running in your classroom quickly.

I hope that my webiste not only directs teachers to the essential resources needed to quickly implement this effective program but also serves as a simple guide too. In the beginning, I know personally it can feel overwhelming to start a new program, so my goal with this website was to ease some of the anxiety and stress that can come with trying something new. This website will hopefully give teachers just starting with UFLI a simple breakdown of the programs essential components and help to expedite the process of learning about a new phonics program that much easier.
